Your Heavenly Father isn’t like your Dad!

In this series, we have been investigating why some people have trouble hearing from God.  We mentioned one big reason is the impact their earthly father has on them as a child.  It is hard to image a loving Father if your images of males remind you of your abusive, absent or neglectful dad.

Here are some comparisons between an earthly father and our loving Father God:

1.  Dad was distant and uninterested in your personal life.

God is intimate and involved in your life,     Psalm 139:1-18

2.  Insensitive and uncaring about you or your problems.

Father God is kind and compassionate,     Psalm 103: 8-14

3.  Perfectionist, demanding of higher achievement, never seemed to be satisfied with what you tried to do, impatient.

God is committed to your growth, proud of what accomplished,    Romans 8:2-29,             2 Corinthians 7:4, Hebrews 12:5-5-11.

4.  Dad was absent or too busy to play with you.  Work seemed to be more important than doing fun things as a family.

God is Always with you, eager to be with you and to talk with you,    Jeremiah 31:20, Ezekiel 34:11-16, Hebrews 13:5.

5.  Dad seemed to take all the fun out of your life. We never did fun things together like other kids.

Your Abba Father is trustworthy, wants to give you a full life,      Lamentations 3:22-23, John 10:10, Romans 12:1-2

6.  At times, dad was controlling and manipulated us to get what he wanted, when he wanted, to make us behave and be quiet so he could watch his news.

God’s will is aimed for your good, perfect and acceptable future.  He gives me freedom to make choices,     Luke 15:11-16, Hebrews 4:15-16

7.  Dad was often mean, cruel and even abusive.  He treated Mum and us kids as thought he didn’t care.

Abba Father is loving, gentle and protective of me, even when He  doesn’t give me what I ask for,     Psalm 18:12, Isaiah 42:3, Jeremiah 31:3

8.  Dad seemed condemning, unforgiving cold and passive.  He didn’t have patience to teach you when you failed.

Father God is full of grace, mercy, forgiving and His heart is always open to me.  He allows me to learn from my mistakes.    Psalm 130:1-4, Luke 15: 17-24

If you grew up with an earthy father as we have described, they you may have ‘coloured’ your view of your Heavenly Father with the same expectations.  If this is true, then why would you heart want anything to do with hearing God.  The fear that your Abba Father might be as demanding, perfectionist, controlling, abusive, unresponsive, insensitive or uninterested can be very real.  How could you trust Him?

Spend some time reflecting on your heart’s view of Father God.  He loves you much to miss out on the good times He wants to spend with you.  Remember, He called you His precious son/daughter, His greatest creation!  He wants to share your world and help you face the problems and issues you find in this life.  He will …. if you let Him
