9/17 What does it mean ‘…to Follow the Lord’?

What do you remember from our previous posts?  So far we have seen that we have a ‘Heart’ and that it can be in different conditions.  Becoming a  Jesus Follower means that our Heart and Spirit have been touched and we are ‘born again’.  To what degree we cooperate with the Holy Spirit depends on us.

It comes down to the heart’s willingness to hear and follow Him.  Our heart can stop us from the kind of walk with our Creator that brings wholeness.  Only when you know your true heart condition can you call your heart to be different.

Then we saw that Jesus came to heal ‘the broken hearted’ and that if we allow Him, He will show us the places where trauma and hurt have happened to get that freedom He already paid for!  So that brings us to this Part Two: What it means “….to Follow the Lord Jesus”.

B.  Our Heart must believe that it is Good News before it will really commit to following Him, Mark 1:15, Mark 16:15.

So what is this ‘Good News’ our Heart is to accept and believe?

1.  ‘Good news’ or good rules and advice?

All other cults and world religions teach how to live to achieve salvation.  Christian religion can be the same:  Jesus plus door knocking, Jesus plus missions work, Jesus plus church attendance, Jesus plus religious traditions, Jesus plus fasting ….or good works to reach good Karma, good works for reincarnation to a better life?

2.  Good News and God’s kingdom hits at the old nature, the seat of self-reliance and pride.

Trying to work our own salvation brings a sense of “I did it my way!” – like Adam and Eve in Genesis, chapter 3.  We have to lay that all aside to just accept His Way.  That’s why The Good News is called ‘A gospel of Grace’.

C.  The correct order is grace, then ‘works’.

1.  We don’t ‘work’ to receive His love.  We have His approval just by accepting His Way, accepting Jesus’ work to save us.  We ‘do’ because we are ‘in Him’ and out of love, we obey.

2.  There are many, many other benefits, privileges in being a Jesus Follower:

“Who Am I in Christ”

We are a SON / DAUGHTER of God – Galatians 4:5, Ephesians 1:5, Romans 8:14

We are a NEW CREATURE in Christ Jesus – 2 Corinthians 5:17, Ephesians 4:24, Colossians 10, 1 Peter 1:23

We are JUSTIFIED (made right) in Christ – Galatians 2:16, Romans 3:24

We have the RIGHTEOUSNESS of God – Romans 3:2, 4:6, 5:17, 1 Corinthians 5:21, Ephesians 4:24

We are MORE THAN A CONQUEROR – Romans 8:37, 2 Corinthians 2:14

We are called to live a VICTORIOUS LIFE – John 5:5, 10:10, 2 John 5:5, 2 Timothy 1:9, 1 Peter 1:16, 1 Thessalonians 4:7, 1 Corinthians 15:57, 2 Corinthians 2:14, Ephesians 4:1

We are DELIVERED from the power of darkness – Colossians 1:13

WE are SET FREE from the power of sin – Romans 6:7, 22, 8:2, Galatians 5:1

We are DEAD TO SIN & WORLD – Romans 6:11, 20, Colossians 2:20, 3:3, Galatians 2:19

We are a LIVING LETTER of Jesus Christ – 2 Corinthians 3:3

We are COMPLETE in Christ – Colossians 2:10

As Christ IS, so ARE WE, in this World – 1 John 4:17

WE are ONE WITH GOD – 1 Corinthians 6:17, Ephesians 5:30, John 17:21

We are REDEEMED FROM THE CURSE – Galatians 3:13

We are a JOINT HEIR with Christ – Romans 8:17, Galatians 4:7, Ephesians 1:11

We are WELL ABLE to defeat the world – 1 John 5:4, 2 Corinthians 2:14

We are ABLE MINISTERS of the New Covenant – 2 Corinthians 3:3, 4:1

We are an AMBASSADOR for Christ – 2 Corinthians 5:20

We are DELIVERED from the evils of this world – Galatians 1:4

We are clothed with SALVATION – Isaiah 61:10

We are GOD’S TEMPLE – 1 Corinthians 3:16, 17, 6:19, 2 Corinthians 6:16

We are a STEWARD of the mysteries of God – 1 Corinthians 4:1

We are HOLY, a partaker of the heavenly calling – Hebrews 3:1, I Peter 1:2

We are GOD’S WORKMANSHIP in Christ – Ephesians 2:10

We are a KING and a PRIEST unto God – Revelations 1:6, 1 Peter 2:9

I am AT REST from my own works – Hebrews 4:3, 10, Matthew 11:28, 29

These are a few of the rights and privileges of being a child of the Most High God.  How many of these can you identify with or have you learned to become yet?  How many does your Heart accept as truth?  If the whole church, the called of God would step into their position in Christ, we would change the world.

3.  Jesus’ perfect life, death and His resurrection makes this reality NOT because we could ever be good enough to earn any of this!  This is what the cults and world religions miss.  We are acceptable to Him because of our faith in Jesus – not by our self-effort and trying hard to be pleasing to Him.

4.  Our Heart needs to know this because we don’t have ‘to work’ to please Him, or to shine ourselves up to be accepted by Him!  When our Heart really sees this, it will rest!

D.  Accepting His Way also deals with our Self-Effort!

1.  See yourselves the way He does, accept His view versus your personal judgement of you, 1 Corinthians 4:3-5.  “We are accepted in the Beloved!”  Choose to see ourselves the way He does.  What does it mean to be conformed to His image as that is God’s goal?

2.  Remember our discussion last week…about accepting and agreeing with the lies of the enemy?   Who sets the measuring stick of our self-image?  ….childhood….????

Does our enemy want you to become what Jesus has called you to be?  …… So what do we do about it? Remember the part about replacing the Heart lies and His Truth?  Our Heart must know who He really is to follow Him.

3.  What does your Heart hear about the Good News?  …..not to have to strive to get it…. not to have ‘to do works’ to receive His love.  It can receive healing because……?  This is where we all have to start!  …or else we push our Heart into trying harder to win His love, to be accepted.  Down that road is a ‘works based theology’ We have ‘to do’ before God loves you.

D.  Summary:

So what is this Good News you Call your heart to Follow?  What does your heart need to hear that’s ‘Good News’?  How does your Heart respond when it does hear the Good News?

Does He want to talk to you about our sense of self worth in Him?

The challenge is to surrender to His Lordship.  BE versus DO……to follow Him.  What does our Heart want…..Rules and religion or life?

A Practical example, if we have time:  The Throne room of your Heart.  Our goal is to allow Jesus to be Lord – but our Heart must want the Good News before it accepts it.
