7/2 Understanding the Covenant made with Jesus Christ

A.  A quick Review:

In this post, we continue with Jehovah God’s Great Rescue Plan for the Human race.  So far we have covered the seven major covenants made between our Creator and a human being.   We’ve talked about the covenant made with the new caregivers of the Garden of Eden.  Then we saw the covenant made with Adam and Eve when sin entered the world.  Next we visited Noah’s time and onto Abraham’s covenant.  From there, we went to Moses and Joshua as they entered their land of promise.

From there, King David brought the next covenant, pointing to the Messiah and the covenant we are covering in this post series.  So welcome back to the Covenant made with the King of Kings, with Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

B.  Welcome to the time of the Messiah

Jehovah had been waiting for the perfect time to reveal The true Messiah.  Many had come saying they were the Messiah or even the Delivery of the people from the cruel Roman rule.  However, only One fulfilled all the Old Testament verses prophesied from the beginning of time – Jesus Christ of Nazareth!

It was a time of great hardship for His chosen people under Roman rule, when He sent His ‘Word’ to enter human history.  The Messiah was not sent to a royal palace, filled with obedient servants awaiting His every wish, but rather to a stable and finally to death.

The numerous temporary aspects of the past covenants were fulfilled in Jesus’ perfect life, death and resurrection.  This included the rituals of sacrifice, the rules covering food laws, physical circumcision and the Sabbath rest for the people and the Land.

The physical has been replaced by the spiritual elements of ‘heart’ worship.  The ‘Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus’ replaced the ‘Law of Sin and Death’ that we inhered in the human old nature, the rebellion and disobedience of Adam and Eve.

For the first time, our rebellious inner nature can be recognised and handled God’s way.

C.  The heart could now be addressed with the love and teaching of the Holy Spirit.

1.  What were the Words of the Covenant with Jesus?

Jehovah knew that humans would never reach the standard needed to be perfect; if we could have, we would not have needed Him to break through time and space and provide ‘THE WAY’ past the enemy and our old nature.  Any works to appease God or to make Him accept us more would never make the grade.

That is why this Covenant is centred in the unmerited grace, the unearned favour of God.  He made ‘The Way’ for us; all we need to do is accept ‘The Way’ He provided rather than our own way to Him.

2. The promise of the blessings of salvation included the following:

a.  We receive total Pardon, Forgiveness and cleansing of all sin – past, present and future!  Acts 10:43, 13:36-39, Luke 7:36-50, 19:1-10, Matthew 9:2, Mark 2:5, 1 John 1:9.

b.  We find ourselves totally Justified, declared Righteous in God’s sight when we experience miracle of the new birth, Romans 3:19-20, 5:1, 3:24-26, Acts 15:8-11.

We now can enter into the legal and experiential Sanctification process, being set apart unto the Lord, John17:17, 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24, Ephesians 5:26-27.

c. As we follow Jesus, we experience the Regeneration of the new birth as we receive the Word, John 3:1-5, 1 Peter 1:23.

d.  Amazingly, we have the Assurance of our son-ship by the witness of the Holy Spirit, Hebrews 5:8-9, 6:10-12, 10:38-39.

e.  Further, we are Adopted into His family, with Sonship rights and privileges, Matthew 12:46-50, Romans 8:15, 23, 29, Galatians 4:5, Ephesians 1:13-14.

f.  Next, we find Glorification, being made honourable in God’s sight, to the possibility of the fullness of God, John 17:22-24, 2 Corinthians 3:18.

3.  This special group is called ‘the church’ universal, worldwide and without denominational walls.  Remember our previous post on what we were promised?  Here is a quick review:

** We are called children of God – Romans 8:16.

** We are called the household of God – Ephesians 2:19

** We are the spiritual children of Abraham – Galatians 3:7

** We are the children of promise– Romans 9:8

** We are called A “people of His own” – Titus 2:14

** We are the heirs of God according to promise – Galatians 3:29

** God’s people are called the temple of God – 1 Corinthians 3:16

** God’s people are called “the circumcision” – Philippians 3:3

** God’s people are called “the Israel of God” – Galatians 6:16

** We are “a chosen generation, royal priesthood, peculiar people, a holy nation”- 1 Peter 2:9

** We are heirs of His kingdom – James 2:5

** He calls us “sons of God” – John 1:12

** We are Kings and priests of God – Revelation 1:6

** We are The Bride of Christ – 2 Corinthians 11:2

** The Body of Christ—1 Corinthians 12.

Although the Old Testament, faithful people knew many of these blessings under previous covenants.  However, the miracle of the New Birth adds dimensions they could not and did not experienced before.

Under the previous 7 Covenants, pardon was given ….. but with the New Covenant, complete forgiveness and total remission of sins was purchased through Jesus’ perfect life, death on the Cross and His resurrection.  Wholeness and healing were available on a scale as never before.

However, this is only the foundation for the New Covenant with Jesus of Nazareth.  These are all amazing, promises and we need to more deeply see the meanings behind the words so we can really understand what He has provided for us.

Again, we will be adding further posts to help our mind and heart really grasp His truth.  Join us in our next post as we look at the blessings that come with His promises.
